Overview
The University is working to reduce the amount of waste we produce by reusing and recycling products wherever possible.
Reducing the impact of our waste
2009/2010 Achievements:
- Reduced waste to landfill by 5%, beating our 3% reduction target.
- Increased our recycling rate to 64%, but not achieving our 66% target.
- Diverted an estimated 45% of biodegradable waste away from landfill.
- Diverted 6,500 redundant books from landfill with our new book reuse and recycling scheme in partnership with READ International and Better World Books.
- Produced new and revised guidance, including a new Waste and Recycling website.
- Started introducing new recycling points to better segregate waste and increase food waste recycling.
- Introduced new Recycling and Waste Management Policy and Waste Guidance Notes.

Equipment Exchange
The Equipment Exchange allows redundant equipment to be advertised, and exchanged or sold between departments, within the University.
Clear outs and moving
Moving office or having a clear out? Advice and support for project managers and individual staff on recycling or disposing of unwanted items — whether it’s a major relocation or a spring clean.
Laboratory waste
There is lots of support and advice available to staff on how to deal with laboratory waste.
