The University is changing its waste collection contractor. The new contractor, Veolia Environmental Services, will start operating gradually throughout the next two months over all campuses.
The new contractor has a strict policy on food waste contamination in the mixed recycling containers. In order to maintain a high recycling rate at the University, please do not put food waste into the personal under-desk bins to avoid contamination of mixed recycling.
Please put all food waste in bins with black bags that can be found in all kitchens and other areas.
Food packaging should be rinsed and placed into either orange-lidded recycling bins or under-desk bins where available.
During August, small containers in King’s Buildings, Easter Bush and Little France have been exchanged and changes in Central Area, Holyrood and ECA will follow in October.
The standard container colours for containers are: blue for paper and cardboard, orange for mixed recyclables and grey for general non-recyclable waste. The new blue and orange containers will have see-through sides to avoid contamination with food waste.
The roll out of large containers in all areas will start in October. This changeover of containers will happen gradually, starting with the external areas (Easter Bush and Little France) and finishing with the Central Area. Shanks Waste Management will continue to provide the general waste collection and disposal in the interim period.
