SET programmes help local students

Dr Aileen Patricia Lothian designs programmes to give school students hands-on experience with Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET).

Young SET Ambassadors 2011

Dr Lothian leads the Young SET Ambassadors programmes and delivers energy and renewables projects, recycling projects and reduce our carbon emissions programmes to schools in the East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian and Edinburgh areas.

The programmes Dr. Lothian delivers provide students with an understanding of the importance of protecting our environment by reducing the amount of carbon emissions into our atmosphere. Students are encouraged to develop their own solutions to environmental problems.

The Young SET Ambassadors programme helps increase pupils’ knowledge about science, engineering and technology while encouraging development of self-esteem, confidence and communication skills.

Mentors, teachers and influential leaders support the programmes. Mr Alex Salmon accompanied the Young SET Ambassadors to China in June 2010, where he led the presentation in Shanghai at the World Expo to help grow Scottish Businesses in China.

Feedback on the Young SET Ambassadors programme has been excellent. University and industry visits have inspired students to go on to further education in science, engineering and technology fields.

Plans are currently being put in place to expand the programmes and roll them out in other countries to enable young people to share in the success of the Science, Engineering and Technology environmental programmes.
