Benjamin M Rosen Professor of Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, former president of the American Astronomical Society. Graduated BSc 1963.

Annelia Sargent

Born and brought up in Fife, Scotland, Anneila Sargent completed a BSc Honours degree in Physics at The University of Edinburgh in 1963.

Professor Sargent has built up an exceptionally strong personal scientific reputation, with interests in the fields of star formation, and the possibility of other life forms existing beyond the solar system.

In 1998 she was presented with both the NASA Public Service Medal and the Caltech Woman of the Year award.

She has been director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy and served as president of the American Astronomical Society from 2000 to 2002.

She returned to Edinburgh in 2001 as a guest speaker at the International Science Festival. She was presented with the University’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 2002 and awarded an honorary doctorate in 2008.
