The University has partnerships with leading universities across Latin America.
Universidad de Chile
The University’s links with South America date back to the nineteenth century, when Dr William Blest, an Edinburgh alumnus, laid the foundations for medical education in Chile. He became the Director of the Chilean Medical Society.
In Argentina, Edinburgh alumnus Alexander Watson Hutton, who graduated in Philosophy in 1881, founded Buenos Aires English High School and the Argentine Association Football League. He is considered the father of football in Argentina.
The University’s CLARE (Caribbean and Latin American Research at Edinburgh) initiative pools our staff expertise and students from a range of disciplines with interests in the region.
Recent research collaborations with Latin America include University academics working with the Center for Metropolitan Studies, Sao Paolo to build bridges between leading researchers in the United Kingdom and Latin America.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Pathfinder initiative is designed to prompt collaboration around data and methods between UK and Brazilian researchers.
