  • An acclaimed composer’s long-lost musical tribute to the city of Edinburgh was uncovered by a University scholar.
  • Researchers discovered why some chickens appear half-male and half-female, shedding new light on the sexual development of birds.
  • We marked the 30th anniversary of the Bedlam Theatre, the oldest student-run theatre in the UK.
  • Medals donated to the University by the Russian Princess Ekaterina Dashkova went on display to mark the opening of the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre, the first of its kind in Britain.

  • Dr Keisuke Kaji worked with a team from the University of Toronto on key research, which found a safer way to reprogramme adult stem cells from skin to behave like embryonic stem cells.

  • A host of famous names from Scotland’s arts scene launched a new literary prize backed by the University, the Edinburgh Gadda Prize.
  • Plans were revealed to landscape Old College Quad to match more closely the vision of its original architects Robert Adam and William Playfair.
  • Television viewers got a glimpse of life behind the scenes at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in fly-on-the-wall documentary, Vet School.
  • The University strengthened its ties with alumni overseas by holding a series of events in Hong Kong, including a meeting of the General Council.
  • Informatics hosted the Scottish tournament of the First Lego League, a competition for teams of young people. Teams built and programmed lego robots to carry out “missions” on the theme of “smarter transport”.
  • Emeritus Professor Peter Higgs, whose theory of particle physics has dominated the discipline for decades, viewed a sculpture that pays tribute to him, in a visit to a science-themed garden.
  • A magical display of miniature books was on display at the University Library.
  • African farmers will benefit from a £2 million grant awarded to the University to help combat poverty in Africa.
