The Chancellor is President of the General Council and nominates an Assessor in the University Court.
The Chancellor is elected by the University’s General Council, and remains Chancellor for life. Degrees are conferred by him, or by the Vice-Chancellor.

His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has held the position of Chancellor of the University since 1953.
In its 150 years of existence, only seven individuals have held this position, the highest in the University.
In 2002, HRH Prince Philip opened the Chancellor’s Building in the University’s new Medical School.
The Chancellor’s Awards, first awarded in 2003, recognise outstanding contributions to the University through teaching or research by staff members.
